This year the third grade students practiced
their letter writing skills by corresponding with Captain Andy who
is currently stationed in Basrah. He is the son-in-law to one of
Miss Rhein's friends. The students wrote and told him about the
cabbage plants they are growing, the SMARTboard in the classroom,
their class trip, and other events that were going on in the school.
Although Captain Andy is very busy with his
work in Iraq, he took the time to answer the students letters. He
compared his life as a soldier with the things the students were
completing, such as book reports and other projects.

He also sent the students a package! He sent a
small Persian prayer rug, a replica of a T wall (the barrier that
protects his unit) and some Iranian danars-they look like dollar
bills but are worth much less in the United States. He sent the
money as a token of his friendship with the class and so they would
have a souvenir of the friendship. Hopefully, the students will be
able to continue to write to him over the summer and will continue
to write next year. He plans to be returning to his home sometime in
December.
