The fourth graders
hosted an event to highlight special people whom they admire. To
prepare for the event, students interviewed an admirable person
(known as a VIP) and then wrote a story about this person’s life.
The Social Studies objective of the project was to learn about a
different time period in history. Students also learned speech
writing and public speaking skills. For the Time Capsule Event,
students presented their stories to a captive audience of parents
and the VIPs. Students described historical events and memorable
anecdotes. As a finale, the speeches expressed why the students
admire their important people. There was a special movie
presentation featuring photographs of the students and their VIPs.
Students then sealed their speeches in time capsule boxes, where
they will keep their stories for years to come.
